In this nation of the Dominican Republic, according to the United Nations and the World Education Forum, we have the worst public schools in the Caribbean and Latin America. In terms of the level of academic achievement, against the tremendous weight of natural born disasters and a never-ending struggle against powerful external and internal forces that undermine their society and its infrastructure, even students in Haiti have achievement levels that are higher than their peers in the Dominican Republic schools. Yet, when we send them to the school, we are more concerned about what is on the head of our daughters and sons instead of the knowledge that is inside their heads...knowledge and education that a school system is supposed to provide, but has failed miserably in this regard. Why do we behave in this way? In order to move forward we need to have a serious dialogue about this nonsense and be determined to fix it.
