In this place, I still find hope for the future, in people. In the last several days, I’ve had the opportunity to host local Ft. Davis students (thanks Bill Davis), and a more remote crowd from Austin (thanks Emily Schroeder) for focused tours on the 82”/2.1M telescope - a slice of early 20th century history that is preserved into the 21st century, and still as important today as when it was first conceived. These young persons are bright, inspired, energetic, insightful, and inquisitive. In this special place they are attentive, not distracted by the trivia of the mundane world, and look to the stars for thoughts and ideas that extend beyond their immediate surroundings. Their questions are indicative of thoughtfulness, their responses are equally built on that. Here these young persons can be inspired by their predecessors, who without computers and gadgets used the raw power and gift of their intellect and minds to advance humankind’s understanding of our place in the universe. They can see science and industry as art, light, and shadow, touch Carnegie and Bethlehem steel, look at the pinnacle of Corning Glass Works product,, and the ingenuity of science, engineering, and craftsmanship materialized into something amazing.
