In this poverty-line-cliff-effect affair, Chan Chun Sing is either setting up a straw man to knock down, or he is not competent as an economist (he was trained as one). I am not delusional enough to believe the latter. It is elementary policy engineering to have multiple poverty lines with benchmarked levels of assistance at each, and offer graduated assistance based on income when someone falls between those lines. The one-size-fits-all threshold policy that Chan Chun Sing himself set up to attack is tremendously flawed, so it is obvious that he would find flaws in it. We cannot let the flaws of a flawed PAP faux proposal be an excuse for denying the needy the help they need. Chan Chun Sing made his case against recognizing poverty by a disgusting ruse. It is important for Singaporeans to recognize the various ruses of the PAP and not be misled.
