In this powerful photo merge, Gettysburg National Military Park highlights some of the themes touched upon by this weekends programs at Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park. Though the park today may seem serene and peaceful, a great place to recreate, 151 years ago it was a killing field and even a year later remained a scene of death and destruction. Soldiers faced decomposed and rotting bodies, many of whom were friends or family; civilians faced tramped, burned, and bloodied fields alongside destroyed or defiled homes. Life for anyone touched by this place would never be the same. We invite you to enjoy your visit to the park, but if you can, take a minute to reflect on images like this that covered the battlefields in North Georgia and around Chattanooga during the Civil War. What must those returning to the battlefield a year after have felt walking the ground, scarred yet still open in its wounds? (ws)
