In this scene of ‘Coup de Torchon’, Lucien the protagonist shows two contradictory sides of his character. On one hand he is the caregiver benevolent colonizer who sympathize with the natives, on the other hand he is also the avoids putting together a contrived image of ‘colonizer’ as the hero who is here to empower the colonized. Even though Travernier took the structure of Hollywood ‘western’ genre, he avoids from emphasizing the heroic overtone of the liberator of the ‘frontier’, and instead his protagonist remains a mere subject full of comic contradictions.
