In this space two weeks ago I questioned the recent decision of the Oxford Union that “This House Believes Islam Is a Religion of Peace.” That argument won the day, 286 to 168 votes, after the Oxford University audience heard the fervent oratory of Mehdi Hasan, a Muslim journalist. Is Islam in fact a religion of peace, as Hasan said? Was George W. Bush right to say “Islam is peace”? Or is it, like most religions (past and present) a belief that in some times and places emphasizes peace and in other times and places doesn’t? Is it perhaps one of those creeds, such as Christianity, that its adherents can interpret in any way that pleases them?
