End subsidised forest destruction (Friends of the Earth) Wood from US forests is being shipped to the UK to be burnt in biomass plants. And our Government is handing out generous subsidises to energy companies who do this, claiming it is “green energy” - which seems odd, considering the Governments own figures show that burning trees for electricity can be dirtier than coal! Bioenergy can be a green energy solution. But we need the Government to support the right kind of bioenergy. Using locally-sourced wood residues from sawmills to heat houses, for example, can have real environmental benefits. Tell the Minister for Energy to stop subsidising forms of bioenergy that are dirtier than coal: https://foe.co.uk/act/end-subsidised-forest-destruction -------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2. Vote in the Pinocchio Awards (Les Amis de la Terre) The Sustainable Development Pinocchio Awards, organized by Friends of the Earth (Les Amis de la Terre) - France, in partnership with Peuples Solidaires - Action Aid France and CRID, aims to expose the social or environmental impacts of multinational companies, in complete contradiction with the sustainable development concept they claim to respect. To publicly denounce the gap between the companies’ speeches and their acts, Friends of the Earth France will award three Pinocchio Awards in tribute to the famous wooden puppet and its very personal conception of the truth: “Greener than green”: awarded to the company which has led the most abusive and misleading communication campaign in regard to its actual activities. “One for all, all for me!”: awarded to the company which has the most aggressive policy in terms of appropriation, exploitation or destruction of natural resources. “Dirty hands, full wallet”: awarded to the company which has the most opaque policy at the financial level (tax evasion, corruption, etc), in terms of lobbying or in its supply chain. Vote now: prix-pinocchio.org/en/nomines.php -------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3. Save the European night trains (FOE Sweden) Deutsche Bahn and their partners in Denmark, the Netherlands, France, Switzerland and Czech Republic are planning to close down a number of night train routes by the end of 2014. This is unacceptable, and a large blow to European night train services! Rail is the most climate friendly way to travel in Europe. Night trains are the time saving alternative to air traffic. Keep Europe together – on the tracks. Urge Deutsche Bahn to save and develop the night trains: jordensvanner.se/trafik/save-the-european-night-trains -------------------------------------------------------------------------- EVENTS -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Tue 11 Nov: MFOE full group meeting, Green Fish Our monthly meeting to catch up on our recents and plan future events and activities. But global sea levels are rising and these coastal zones, their people, agriculture and biodiversity, are threatened with increased flooding and seawater inundation. Coastal habitats, such as mangroves and saltmarsh, can act as natural sea defences, but human population growth has led to their damage and loss, mostly through reclamation for agriculture. Creating new mangrove and saltmarsh could protect coastal communities from rising sea levels, but this needs land. Do the benefits of flood defence outweigh the loss of high-value agricultural land? Can habitat be successfully created? And are communities willing to ‘give land back to the sea’? Part of a series of talks in a collaboration between Manchester Metropolitan University and Oxfam. When: 6pm to 7.30pm, Thursday 13 November Where: The Refectory, John Dalton Building, MMU, Chester Street, Manchester, M1 5GD More info & booking: https://eventbrite.co.uk/e/13525652591 --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Thu 13 Nov: Enough is Enough: building a sustainable economy in a world of finite resources, Bar 21 We’re overusing the earth’s finite resources, and yet excessive consumption is failing to improve our lives. In this talk, Dan O’Neill will lay out a visionary but realistic alternative to the perpetual pursuit of economic growth—an economy where the goal is enough, not more. He will explore specific strategies to conserve natural resources, stabilise population, reduce inequality, fix the financial system, create jobs, and more—all with the aim of maximizing long-term well-being instead of short-term profits. Dan O’Neill is a lecturer in ecological economics at the University of Leeds, and the chief economist at the Centre for the Advancement of the Steady State Economy (CASSE). His work focuses on the changes that would be needed to achieve a prosperous non-growing economy, and alternative ways of measuring progress besides GDP. He is co-author (with Rob Dietz) of Enough Is Enough: Building a Sustainable Economy in a World of Finite Resources, an international best-seller which has recently been made into a short film. With the winter at our doorstep, UK household energy consumption is about to enter its yearly peak season. The main contributor to this peak is home heating. Because of its great appetite for energy, domestic heating has been a popular topic in sustainable consumption research and policy intervention. This presentation will use the example of keeping warm at home to illustrate what it can mean to take practices as a unit, not only of analysis, but also of design. Using this example, it will illustrate (1) how a practice-oriented view sheds a different light on the issue of domestic heating, and (2) how a design approach can reveal and flesh out radical, yet plausible avenues of change and opportunities for intervention. Drawing on recent experiences in the DEMAND Centre, the presentation aims to develop the practice-oriented design framework originating from a product design context into a set of tools and provocations that has relevance to a broader agenda in sustainable consumption. Please book your place by emailing Katrina Farrugia at [email protected]. When: 4pm – 5.30pm, Wednesday 26 November 2014. Coffee and registration will begin at 3.45 pm.
