Then, ease about one mile west-southwest to Loggerhead Key and the nearby Loggerhead Reef, a spectacular, unspoiled dive with acres of healthy corals. Get up close and personal with the namesake of this enchanted area, a juvenile Green Sea Turtle. Top off the Dry Tortugas Sector with a dive on the Windjammer Wreck, around 3/4 mile southwest from Loggerhead Key. Her name was the Avanti when she sank in a violent tempest on January 21st, 1907 in 25 feet of water! Swim with clouds of darting silversides on this historic sailing vessel that competed directly with steam powered ships for business! Then, head up to Marathon and visit Richie Moretti at the Turtle Hospital and learn that the biggest threat to their survival is mankind! Richie has dedicated his life to rehabilitating injured sea turtles and releasing them back into the open ocean. Learn simple things that all water sports enthusiasts can do to protect these incredible sea creatures!
