In todays America of red state/blue state and too much - TopicsExpress

In todays America of red state/blue state and too much government/too little government, I would like to conduct an experiment. What would happen if, as a cost savings/sequester-like measure, we limited each state to only receive up to the amount of federal funds they contribute to the public coffers, while not exceeding spending limits currently in place? We would then be able to eliminate the deficit spending that occurs in many states (mostly red states that are run by Republicans looking for smaller federal government) and would provide us with a significant surplus from states that contribute a whole lot more than they receive in return, money that could be used to pay down our debt. How long would it take for those freeloader states to begin to understand all the government does for them? How long would it take for those states that contribute a whole lot more than they get back to become resentful to those freeloading states? If you ask me, this would be another view of the argument many conservatives use when they talk about half of our nation not paying taxes. Only, instead of dividing ourselves by social class, we would be dividing ourselves by states. Either way, I dont believe the argument holds water, since lifting up our weakest citizens helps us all, but it would give us some better perspective on how the sacrifices of some benefits the whole.
