In todays Warrnambool Standard..... Warrnambool Standard The fertile fields of Laang By EVERARD HIMMELREICH Oct. 11, 2014, People from throughout Australia and overseas are expected to attend a reunion next month of families whose forebears pioneered settlement of the Laang district. The reunion at the Laang Hall on Saturday, November 8 will bring together descendants of the Redpath, Bennett, Guinea and Buck families. A family history written by Heather Cook and Tania Shalders will also be launched. Mrs Cook said the gathering would involve descendants of Elizabeth Guinea (nee Redpath) who emigrated to Australia from northern Ireland in 1854 with her second husband George Guinea. The couple had eight children, while Elizabeth Guinea’s son by her first husband Robert, Robert junior, also emigrated to Australia in 1868. As for the Bennetts, Robert Bennett junior married Susanna Buck, settling at Laang and producing 17 children. Mrs Cook said the family history book is titled The Road to Laurel-Dale — the name of the Bennetts’ homestead. Laurel-Dale farm is still run by descendants of the Bennetts, David and Allison Cook, and David’s parents Ronald and Aileen Cook. The reunion will include a picnic lunch and tours of Laurel-Dale where many artefacts from the family’s forebears have been found. It will also include a display of vintage cars owned by family members. The reunion will continue on Sunday to see plaques recently installed on Robert and Susanna Bennett’s graves in the Terang cemetery, as well as on the grave of their son George Bennett, who died in the First World War. Buck and Guinea family graves will also be visited.
