In today’s afternoon sessions, Defense counsel for Nuon Chea, Son Arun and Victor Koppe, and Counsel Arthur Vercken for Khieu Samphan examined Witness Lev Lam. Koppe sought to clarify the extent of the Witness’ personal knowledge of the evacuees that came to his village following 17 April and how their biographies were recorded. The Witness also testified on the targeting of former Lon Nol officials and maintained that he led 20 Svay Trans (Lon Nol commune militia) and their families for execution by District KR soldiers. The Witness testified that Lon Nol’s security forces were comprised of soldiers who fought the war and the Svay Trans who defended the villages. During Koppe’s and Vercken’s questioning, it was established that the Witness never witnessed the execution directly and he only heard rather than witnessed the 100 evacuee families who were moved from his village had been executed from the chief of his village. He maintained, however, that he brought the 20 people, 10 of whom were tied and brought away by District military, and afterwards he could hear someone counting from the distance “one-two-three”. The sessions saw numerous objections for Prosecutor Lysak, concerning repetitive questioning, mischaracterizing the Witness’ testimony, leading Witness to speculate, and questions outside of the scope of Case 002/01. The court is adjourned and tomorrow will resume to hear the testimony of TCW 169.
