In today’s passage from Matthew 17:22-27, Jesus announces His death. There is a lot of consternation among His Disciples but then the subject changes. Grief continues but as is so often true in our lives other issues interrupt. All of us are aware of many situations like this. While grief continues, so does life and its demands. In this instance it is concerning “Temple tax.” Jesus makes it clear that there is no liability for Him but immediately takes the situation in hand and satisfies the Temple’s demands albeit in a very unusual way! Sometimes we too are challenged to move beyond what we know is our direct responsibility or obligation. This so often happens in family situations when we feel we are asked to do more than our fair share in caring for a family member, in supporting someone, you can name other instances from your own life. You and I may have to do as Simon Peter did. We have to drop in the hook of trust and know that Jesus will give us what we need to live in and through that situation. This may not be in a monetary way, however, it is so often the emotional demands that are most draining.
