In truth these kids had jobs long after the government got involved. Real change did not come until millions of industrial workers together demanded that their children should have a place in public schools so they would not be forced to compete with them for wage labor. This change was largely won in the 1930s; although, I myself worked heavy road construction at age 10 in the 1950s. Now we are starting to feel the loss of these hard won gains as organized labor grows weaker and more fragmented-- our class needs to reverse this tendency. Solidarity forever!
