In war there is no substitute for victory. Douglas MacArthur This sentiment from Douglas MacArthur seems to have been forgotten in our modern culture. People seem to want to candy-coat things and discuss how you should fight fair or not lower yourself to the level of your enemy. This touchy-feely attitude sounds wonderful. It certainly makes you appear socially acceptable, but it doesn’t hold water in the real world for one important reason – it is unrealistic. When you are engaged with an enemy in a life-or-death situation, and you are “playing” by a set of rules which your enemy neither plays by nor respects, you have just handicapped yourself and your chances for victory. You are handicapped even more if you publicize the fact that you will “play” by those rules no matter what. No matter what weapon is pulled or how dire the situation, “we will not scratch, kick, bite, or hit below the belt.” That is ridiculous! There is no substitute for victory. In a serious physical confrontation, you must use whatever you can to ensure that you are not only victorious, but that you also come out of the encounter with as few injuries as possible. There is no such thing as fighting fair in a life-or-death confrontation. That is only a myth. There are no rules except to win the battle and walk away with your life. I can assure you that your enemy will not be fighting fair; he will use anything and everything that he can to accomplish his goal.
