In writing very often we face difficulties about whether verbs should be #Singular or #Plural when theyre linked to a group (collective noun). Here is the solution. If the focus is on the group as a single unit,use singular verbs;if its on individual members of the group,use plural verbs. If youre still not sure,read the sentence aloud,replacing the collective noun with it or they to see which one sounds correct. Here are a few examples.Notice them carefully. #The committee (it) was elected. #The committee (they) have been arguing about the minutes. #The staff (they) were all busy. #The United Nations (it) has decided. #The couple (they) have left the wedding reception. #The Seychelles (it) has a new president. #The headquarters (they) are in Bangladesh.
