Further information on the specific sectors can be seen at; makeinindia/sector/food-processing/ Agro-processing industries have an important role in the economic development of India - directly as a source of income and employment and indirectly for their backward linkages with agriculture. India has an abundant supply of a variety of raw agro-products; being one of the largest producers of not only rice, wheat, milk and sugar but also a number of fruits, vegetables, spices and meats. With a population of 1.2 billion, India is a large and growing market for food products. Its 350 million strong middle class, with increasing incomes and changing food habits, provides a huge market for agro-products and processed food. The relatively low-cost but skilled workforce can be effectively utilised to set up large, low-cost production bases for domestic and export markets.
