Incident: Caucasus MD83 at Tehran on Oct 3rd 2013, engine shut down in flight By Simon Hradecky, created Saturday, Oct 5th 2013 19:44Z, last updated Saturday, Oct 5th 2013 19:49Z An Air Caucasus McDonnell Douglas MD-83 on behalf of Fly Georgia, registration 4L-LUL performing flight 9Y-402 (scheduled dep Oct 2nd) from Tehran Imam Khomeini (Iran) to Tbilisi (Georgia) with 70 passengers, was climbing out of Tehran when the left hand engine (JT8D) flamed out prompting the crew to stop the climb and shut the engine down. The aircraft entered a hold to burn off fuel and returned to Tehran for a safe landing about one hour after departure. Following repairs and an engine run up the aircraft was able to depart again and reached Tbilisi with a delay of 13 hours and only 50 passengers after 20 decided to not fly with the incident aircraft.
