Incident On Sunday afternoon, 12th, Solent Coastguard requested the immediate launch of the Gosport Lifeboat after receiving 999 calls reporting a fishing boat with 2 persons onboard being blown under Ryde pier. The lifeboat made best speed to Ryde pier, arriving 6 minutes later. Having suffered engine failure and with its anchor dragging, the fishing boat had been blown under the pier. A large sea swell and strong winds were buffeting the vessel on the underside of the pier and it was trapped against the pier structure. Despite the precarious situation, the lifeboat crew were able to secure a towline to the stricken craft and extracted it and the two occupants from the immediate danger. One fisherman had suffered minor head injuries, whilst the other had injured his hand and leg. The Gosport Lifeboat took both men to Ryde harbour where they were met by the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service, paramedics then assessed and treated the men’s injuries. The Ryde Inshore Rescue Service were also tasked to this incident, they assisted Gosport Lifeboat by towing the fishing boat back to Ryde harbour.
