Incident: SAS B736 at Helsingborg on Apr 6th 2014, temporary runway excursion on landing By Simon Hradecky, created Wednesday, Apr 9th 2014 13:36Z, last updated Monday, Nov 3rd 2014 13:58Z A SAS Scandinavian Airlines Boeing 737-600, registration LN-RRY performing flight SK-187 from Stockholm to Helsingborg (Sweden), landed on Helsingborgs runway 14 at 22:47L (20:47Z), however, the left hand main gear exited the left edge of the runway temporarily. The aircraft rolled out without further incident. Swedens Statens Haverikommission rated the occurrence a serious incident and opened an investigation on Apr 9th 2014. Ängelholm/Helsingborg Airport features a runway 14/32 of 1945 meters/6380 feet length. Swedens Statens Haverikommission (SAIB) released their final report in Swedish with English summary concluding the probable causes of the incident was: The crew was most likely subjected to a Black-hole approach illusion that made it difficult to timely detect and correct the aircrafts drift. The first officer (29, CPL, 2,222 hours total, 2,018 hours on type) was pilot flying, the captain (49, ATPL, 13,304 hours total, 3,319 hours on type) was pilot monitoring while the aircraft was on an automatic coupled ILS approach to runway 14, the cloud base was at 300 feet, surface winds were at 4 knots from 160 degrees, at 200 feet AGL the winds were at 10 knots from 208 degrees, visibility was 1300 meters in moderate drizzle. After the first officer became visual with the approach and runway edge lights he disconnected the autopilot and continued the landing manually. According to QAR data the aircraft crossed the runway threshold about 10 meters to the right of the runway center line, subsequently crossed the center line diagonally, the captain assisted with maneouvering the aircraft and the aircraft returned to the center line however not before the left main gear had contacted and damaged two runway left edge lights. The aircraft sustained no damage. The SAIB summarized the crew interviews: The flight crew has explained during interviews that although the runway edge lights could be seen, it was difficult to see the surface of the runway and the runway markings. The Commander has also explained that there were no distinct references.
