Inconsistent. It couldnt quite find the right balance between cinematic and theatrical (and some parts were WAY off), but it came extremely close at times. Some of the staging and cinematography was very musical, but there were times when the actual singing performances compromised the effect of the musical sequences (take, for example, Your Fault, where what should be naturalistic, vaguely tuned sprechstimme is very squarely sung, manually-tuned absurdity). Johnny Depps performance as the wolf is just silly, but Meryl Streep is really good as the witch, and the most beautiful moments in the film are her songs Stay with Me and Last Midnight. Id go see it again for the former alone.
