Incorporating Climate Information Vital in Everyday Decision Making, Says Director of Research and Extension Office By Sileshi Yilma and Ephrem Mamo A three days training which was prepared by Haramaya University’s Research and Extension Office under the theme “Climate Scenarios Development from Climate Model Experiments and their Use for Impact Studies” was conducted from November 27 to 29, 2013 at the University’s Resource Center. In an opening speech, Dr. Mengistu Ketema, director of Research and Extension Office, said incorporating climate information on everyday decisions that people make is vital. It is a high time for looking forward in organizing such trainings which would enable academicians to mainstream climate change issues in their curricula, he added. Dr. Kibebew Kibret, head of School of Natural Resources Management and Environmental Studies, said the training on climate change scenarios development is indeed timely and trainees would also gain state of the art knowledge on the various climate models. Two similar trainings were given from June 10 to 12, 2012 and January 10 to 12, 2013. The ultimate objectives of the trainings were establishing a new behavior and habit of making our decisions, not only based on the business as usual approaches but also to integrate added values from climatically informed decisions. It was also indicated that the 75 staff members and researchers who participated in the training would be able to gain the latest knowledge on the current status of climate change modeling. They would also be able to project the future climate for their respective research areas for impact studies subsequently building their capacity of mainstreaming climate information in various adaptation approaches and measures; it was indicated during the occasion. There were critical feedbacks from participants on the absolute importance of such timely trainings and requested the organizers if further trainings can be conducted, considering the necessity of linking those climate change scenarios development exercises and further steps of vulnerability assessment methodologies and techniques, as well as steps for successful prioritization of adaptation options and strategies. The climate change training organizers outlined that there are such interests with an absolute need for funding, and call for any interested potential funders to collaborate in taking the next steps of organizing trainings touching any dimensions of climate change, vulnerability and impacts assessments, and adaptation prioritizations.
