Increasingly college and university library collections in the - TopicsExpress

Increasingly college and university library collections in the humanities and social sciences are unwittingly for teaching only. When you ask librarians which titles are not being cut, they instantly and proudly say the ones getting the most use. They say digital journals allow them to keep up with that. When I point out that those articles would be the ones used in classes, they agree. When I inform them that this would spell the death of journals less accessible to undergraduates, they only then begin to see what they have been doing. Then they simply resort to saying they have to make cuts. At first glance this means simply that the cost of research is being thrown on faculty and graduate students to buy their own access to journals. Yet it is worse because few journals will survive without a solid base of institutional subscriptions.
