Indeed. There is no need to hover, but pay attention to any cues that your child might be struggling. The beginning of a new school year is filled with change and transitions - new schools, different teachers with different expectations, and a new routine. Be aware of any significant or drastic changes such as frequent worries or tearfulness, sleep disturbance, moodiness and irritability, or school avoidance. It is entirely normal to have some bumps as everyone settles in. Keep listening and encouraging them to talk. If troubles are interfering with daily living/quality of life and persist beyond the first few weeks of school it is advisable to check in with a school counselor or therapist.
