Independence Day As we celebrate the 4th of July, Independence Day, let us consider where the country is after a quarter century of Regan conservatism: The rich have gotten richer by exporting American jobs to sweatshops overseas while the average American has gone nowhere; Free market deregulation has plunged the American economy into a collapse almost as bad as the Great Depression, while Reagan conservatives have obstructed recovery by austerity and preventing job creation and infrastructure investment; The activist Conservative Supreme Court has legalized the personhood of a corporation to practice freedom of speech by spending unlimited amounts anonymously to corrupt the election process; The activist Conservative Supreme Court has granted a closely held corporation to exercise the imposition of its religious values on its employees violating their rights to freedom from religious intimidation; The activist Conservative Supreme Court has reduced protection of voter rights giving states the license to restrict voter access to those who would not vote conservative; The activist Conservative Supreme Court has granted the intrusive power to corporation management to dictate health care for women without the license to practice medicine; Conservatives in Congress on the eve of President Obama’s inauguration conspired to obstruct any and all his agenda for the purpose of failing his presidency and the nation’s interests; Conservatives in Congress have blocked reform of an immigration system and consistently voted to repeal the Affordable Health Care Act for the purpose of denying health care for poor and middle-class Americans. Those Americans who embraced the Reagan Revolution have steadfastly sought to turn back the hard fought liberties and human rights that guided this country’s history, and advocated for establishment of a theocratic interpretation and application of the Constitution under a single conservative denominational Christian doctrine. In this day of Independence, think about how much has been lost because of the Reagan Revolution and the politicization of the Christian religion
