Independence Day-Pastor Raul Ries “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, Because He has anointed Me To preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives And recovery of sight to the blind, To set at liberty those who are oppressed;” Luke 4:18 Independence Day is an American holiday, a national celebration of our individual right to live and worship God free from oppression. This day was established as the Declaration of Independence was signed by the last representatives on July 4, 1776. We officially declared our independence from the tyranny of England. In 1892, Francis Bellamy wrote the original words of the Pledge of Allegiance. It was short and to the point, “I pledge allegiance to my Flag and the Republic for which it stands, one nation indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.” We stood as a nation against the oppression of England’s monarchy in order to establish a nation of freedom, liberty and justice for all. This was not an original idea. This is a foundational truth of Christianity. Christ came to proclaim liberty to the captives and the oppressed. He came to set us free from true bondage — our slavery to sin. While we celebrate our freedom as a nation today, we must remember, there are many who live in bondage today. There are many nations who do not recognize freedom for their people, especially religious freedom. Let’s not take the liberty we have as a nation and as Christians for granted, but celebrate the liberty we have in Christ.
