Independence Day Trivia – The announcement of the independence of India was made in the British Parliament on February 20, 1947 by the Labour Party government, soon after assuming power. The initial plan was to quit India by June 1948. The Congress wanted India to be declared independent on January 28, 1948. Lord Mountbatten, in order to save himself and the British Raj from the brunt of apprehended communal violence on account of partition of India, decided to free India before the originally planned date. The date August 15, 1947 was chosen by Lord Mountbatten, as it was the second anniversary of the Japanese surrender to the Allied Forces in the Second World War. Astrologers decreed August 15, 1947 as an inauspicious date. Hence, the celebrations of independence begun on the 14th of August 1947 itself, with a special session of the Constituent Assembly. Vande Mataram and not Jana Gana Mana was the patriotic hymn that was first sung by the Constituent Assembly members when the celebration of Independence began at 11 PM on August 14, 1947. The first National Flag of independent India that was presented, was presented on behalf of the women of India. The story of independent India begun with a minor goof-up. After the mid-night session when Pandit Nehru went to the Governor General to submit his list of Cabinet Ministers for the swearing in ceremony, he handed him an empty envelope. Happy Independence Day !
