Independence Day represents independence for many people in many different ways. Rock Singer/Actress/Icon Tina Turner celebrated Independence Day by starting a new chapter in her life. After fighting back and leaving her first husband with 36 Cents and a Mobil Credit Card, she begin to pursue a new career as a solo artist and a free Lady. Tina performed in many Casinos and Hotels gaining excellent reviews and requests to appear on television specials despite not having a hit record. In 1979, Tina asked music manager Roger Davies to be her manager and at first he was hesitant, but after seeing her perform two shows at a Hotel in San Francisco, Roger agreed and when he asked Tina what did she want to do, she told him that she did NOT want to sing songs about heartache, pain and blues. She WANTED to sing romantic ballads, happy love songs and Rock and Roll. Roger believed in her vision and he informed her that she needed to recruit a new set of musicians (the ones she had hired originally were charging her too much money) who were young and could play Rock and Soul and to change her image. Tina did so and she got more gigs including the opportunities to perform with Rod Stewart and tour with The Rolling Stones which led to her getting a deal with Capitol Records where she released many hit albums including Private Dancer which went multi-platinum and scored many hits including Whats Love Got To Do With It which became her first # 1 Pop hit and earned many Grammy and American Music Awards. Tina also starred with Mel Gibson in the classic film Mad Max 3 Beyond Thunderdome. Tina also embarked on several world tours and she became the first Black Female performer to have successful sold-out stadium tours. Her 2000 Twenty-Four Seven tour grossed nearly 100 million dollars beating out Dr. Dres and N-Synchs tours combined. Her post retirement 2008 tour grossed millions as well. Though Tina is officially retired from touring, she is enjoying life in Switzerland with her new husband Record Executive Erwin Bach, who she dated for 28 years before marrying him last summer. Tinas success shows that anybody can pursue their goals and be happy by leaving negative situations and people and when she declared hers in 1976, she showed people that happiness can be achieved along with hard work, dedication and determination. Da-Professors Lounge salutes Tina Turner for declaring her independence by showing the world that a Lady who grew up on a farm in the segregated South can live in a grand mansion.
