Independent Book Stores are alive and thriving! Occasionally, - TopicsExpress

Independent Book Stores are alive and thriving! Occasionally, we hear questions or comments about the independent bookstore business and how these businesses are disappearing. Well, as Mark Twain once said, the reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated. The American Booksellers Association reports: There have been modest increases in the associations bookstore membership since 2009. Book sales in independent stores grew almost 8 percent in 2012 in the U.S. over the previous year, and independent bookstores held on to almost all those gains in 2013. Sales numbers for 2014 are still being reviewed, but by all indications, it was a good year for indie bookstores. Going into the final quarter of 2014 unit sales of books were slightly over 2013. In addition, new stores are opening, established stores are finding new owners, and a new generation is coming into the business as both owner/managers and frontline booksellers. All of this is a result of the fact that indie booksellers remain a resilient and entrepreneurial group.
