Independent MPs want more equalisation funds for Tasmania Andrew Wilkie and Jacqui Lambie want the Tasmanian Freight Equalisation Scheme to continue. Independent MPs Andrew Wilkie and Jacqui Lambie have joined forces to urge the Federal Government to continue providing freight subsidies for Tasmania. The MPs, both from Tasmania, want the Tasmanian Freight Equalisation Scheme to continue. The scheme subsidises transport costs for goods coming into Tasmania. According to Wilkie, it costs around $500 to transport a 20-foot container from the Port of Melbourne to North America. He says adding a trip from Hobart via the north of Tasmania and shipping on Bass Strait adds another $1,500 to the bill. READ MORE
