Independent contractor vs employee Theres a studio looking to - TopicsExpress

Independent contractor vs employee Theres a studio looking to hire me and seems to want to hire as an independent contractor (something Ive never done). Im trying to figure out if the job is really for an employee but is filed as an independent contractor or is definitely an independent contractor position. I was told I would be working a set number of hours hours per week at $9-$10/hour (minimum wage here is $8). I would be taking information from people who go to the studio, set up, shoot, edit, photo sales, printing, calling customers, etc. I wont be using my own equipment (as far as Im aware). It seems a little off but Im not familiar enough to make a judgment call. I also wonder who would be liable if something were to happen. Like if a light stand fell and injured a customer, would I be liable if the customer were to sue? Would I be liable to replace broken equipment? Is there insurance photographers buy into for cases like this?
