India: New Ministry for Skills Development and Entrepreneurship The Community Colleges in USA could be a model for job-oriented skills development. The two year Associate Degrees of community colleges, deal with a number of job-oriented and skills development courses for those who seek immediate employment. Admission to these colleges is after Grade 12 (equivalent to Plus 2 in India). They can pursue the 4 year degree later, by joining regular university. These colleges must be established in every village and must cater to the job requirements in the community, so that graduates do not have to go far to seek employment. This scheme could rationalize the polytechnic and NCVT (National Council of Vocational Training) ITI courses. The two year degree community colleges would stop the mad rush to the colleges for a degree. the 3 year university degree must be a 4 year degree and admission must be through national level standardized tests similar to SAT. The new vision and focus by Prime Minister Narendra Modi are steps in the right direction. Hope the new leader of the task force and ministry Shri Sarbananda Sonowal will meet the challenges successfully.
