India diaries-2: Its been ages since I ate jalebis, I said to my mother. She had just emerged from the kitchen, carrying a bowl of sprouted something in her hand. I suppose you know what all that sugar and oil does to ones health, she said in a disapproving tone. (For the unfortunate souls who havent had the pleasure of sampling jalebis, they are little coils of heaven, deep fried and soaked in sugar syrup, and eaten hot and dripping and crispy right away.) I frowned. Youre already fat, my sister quipped. Theres no need to go extra lengths to add to that. To emphasize her point, she glanced at her discarded maternitywear that I had ended up wearing. She mouthed something that sounded like Faternitywear, but given her politically-correct denial, I cant be absolutely sure on that. I sighed. Whats a girl to do except gorge on yummies when visiting family after five long years? But alas, that was not to be. Until... Mother-in-law to the rescue! She looks just fine, she said, then turned to me. Come. Well go get some jalebis for you. And off we went. We drove and drove through crazy traffic and progressively narrowing streets, weaving through a medley of jaywalkers and harried holiday-shoppers and cattle that threatened to impale anyone who dared look in their direction. But finally we found the place. And I gorged and I gorged and I gorged. The rest, as they say, is history.
