India has been experimenting with Reusable Launch Vehicle design for a while and in 2012 the design-related issues was approved and a scaled prototype designed to be built. The space agency, as a first step towards realising a Two-Stage To Orbit (TSTO) re-usable launch vehicle, has developed a winged RLV-TD. AVATAR (from Aerobic Vehicle for Transatmospheric Hypersonic Aerospace TrAnspoRtation) is what the concept for a manned single-stage reusable spaceplane capable of horizontal takeoff and landing, for low cost satellite space launches, as well as for space tourism is what it has been named and looks like a cross between the Space Shuttle and X planes. Towards this, the launch of the GSLV III this month is crucial. Not only for the revalidation of the cryogenic engine, but a number of other technologies will be tested which will be crucial for AVATAR.
