Indian Pulses Production to Decline: Agromet (IMD) 23 Jul 14 09:49:31 The Agro met service department of Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast a dip in production of pulses in the country, blaming erratic rainfall, especially in Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, which contribute about 80 % of the production of pulses, but have been badly hit by scanty to low rainfall this year. As a result, the agro-met department has suggested farmers in these areas change their crop patterns and look for alternate crops. According to the deputy director general of Agromet (Agricultural Meteorology), said, The rainfall has been especially poor in Karnataka and Maharashtra — key states for pulses — in June and the first half of July this year. We would discourage farmers from sowing green gram and black gram in this weather. Instead, onion, sesame, maize, sunflower, niger, castor, bajra, groundnut (spreading), redgram, desi cotton, horsegram, cowpea may be taken up, so that farmers arent affected too badly. The Department is currently more focused on Maharashtra and Gujarat as both states have witnessed poor monsoon rains until now this year.
