Indian good news! HARD TALK Hussein Shobokshi saudigazette.sa//index.cfm?met... I recently boarded a flight from the new global hub Dubai to my home to town of Jeddah. The flight was operated by Emirates Airlines on one of its massive A-380 double-decker aircraft which had a full house basically with passengers coming from every corner of the world just about. The crew onboard the flight was from eight different countries. The chief stewardess however was a senior charming lady from Mumbai in India. She mentioned that there were "many" Indian nationals as part of the crew of this Emirates flight, as well as others. I also could not help but notice the items that were on the tempting menu, included famous Indian dishes such as "Biryani" and "Tandoori chicken". Needless to say the entertainment program was full of successful Bollywood films. I chose to watch one of them: "Jab Tak Hai Jaan”, starring the hugely popular Shak Rukh Khan and the exotically beautiful Katrina Kaif, as well as many choices of Hindi songs. It popped out in my head all of a sudden, how important, influential and sometimes very effective the soft power that India has in the world today. Some of the greatest writers in the English language today (both in fiction and non-fiction) are of Indian origin. Some of the world’s biggest movie stars are Indian (definitely it is measured by the size of fan base!). Some of the biggest multi-nationals are headed by top executive officers of Indian origin excelling and succeeding in a very competitive world. It can be easily said that the Indianof today exemplifies what it means to be a “global” citizen. Crossing borders and cultures and adjusting to local requirements with great ease. Furthermore, the huge Indian Diaspora that is effectively present in almost every country around the world creates a massive unique network that enables the motherland to exercise some important influence when needed. Indian confidence has grown to new levels with the great success of companies and properties that were acquired by Indian conglomerates and turned around. Many of these acquisitions were thought of as dead deals, completely useless, but to every one’s surprise the results were nothing short of brilliant. Companies like Jaguar, Land Rover, steel companies and hotel properties in the US were all turned around from losing ventures with horrible reputations to some very respectful ones, earning the admirations of many new fans around the globe instantly. The world benefits a great deal form a strong and a confident India as the world’s (especially emerging markets) need a successful new model to follow, to create a new paradigm. India did well in some sectors such as education, healthcare and information technology. The world greatly anticipates India to go heavily into other sectors with the same strength and focus. That would be very good news indeed!
