Indian opposition leader Narendra Modi has launched the construction of the worlds tallest statue. The US$338 million project is in honour of one of the countrys founding fathers. The statue of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, who was first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehrus deputy and his interior minister, but often at odds with him, is to be built on a river island in Gujarat. It is the home state of both Mr Patel and Mr Modi. It will be built in four years and will be twice the height of the Statue of Liberty. The statue is being used to undermine the ruling Nehru-Gandhi political family. Mr Modis main rival in upcoming general elections is the ruling Congress partys Rahul Gandhi, Mr Nehrus great-grandson. 938live/ks
