Indie Throwback Pick for 8/18 Artist: The Helio Sequence Fans of Modest Mouse, My Bloody Valentine, and the Flaming Lips can appreciate the ambient psychedelic sounds of the Helio Sequence. From Beaverton, Oregon the band consists of Brandon Summers and Benjamin Weikel. Their purity in home studio recording gives for a unique layering of sound, kind of like taking a bite into cinnamon swirl coffee cake. After switching from independent Portland label Cavity Search Records to Sub Pop things look to be on rise for the band. However after the release of their 2004 album Love and Distance and the subsequent tour Brandon Summers severely ruined his voice. He returned to Portland to rehabilitate and after drawing on inspiration from Bob Dylan, Summers was back in the Saddle and began touring for their 2008 album Keep Your Eyes Ahead. But Summers voice was not the end of their problems. While on tour, the band’s rented studio space flooded, ruining gear and leaving the band out of a practice space. But why some would see this as a gigantic obstacle, The Helio Sequence used this to their advantage and rented out a remote industrial building which offered them space to take their experimentation to a whole different level and produced their 2012 album Negotiations. Today you will hear music from the album where Brandon Summers regained his voice. I’m playing The Helio Sequence “Keep your Eyes Ahead” https://youtube/watch?v=QIicqULYhGw
