Indigenous societies in Brazil are facing the biggest challenge in - TopicsExpress

Indigenous societies in Brazil are facing the biggest challenge in regression of rights achieved in the Constitution of 1988, with intense pressure of opposite interests from the federal government, big ranchers, mining companies and evangelical missions. Indigenous struggle for territory have exposed central contradictions of the inclusive program and sustainable development project of Lula and PT government. Conflicts with indigenous communities have emerged in every corner in Brazil, from southern state of Rio Grande do Sul, to conflicts for land in Bahia and Mato Grosso do Sul, against dams in Tapajós and Xingu rivers in Amazonia, against mining in Pará or illegal logging in Rondônia. Presenting a dynamic of conflicts I will also discuss some theoretical approaches to indigenous philosophy (with readings of Viveiros de Castro, and Davi Kopenawa and Ailton Krenak) as resistances against the State in times of ecological crisis. Indians, according to Viveiros de Castro (2014), are specialized in the end of the world, and we should learn with them how to face the Anthropocene and resist.
