Indira Gandhi Cultural Centre Dhaka Press Release 22 September, 2013 Visit of a seven member Bangladeshi cultural delegation led by Mr. Partha Barua to Bhubaneshwar, Patna and Varanasi from 25 September to 5 October, 2013 for musical concerts under ICCR sponsorship On the invitation of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), Government of India, a seven member Bangladeshi cultural delegation led by Mr. Partha Barua and comprising other eminent Bangladeshi artistes such as Ms. Samina Chowdhury, Ms. Fahmida Nabi and Mr. Bappa Mazumdar, and three accompanying musicians will visit Bhubaneshwar, Patna and Varanasi in India from 25 September to 5 October, 2013 to participate in a series of musical concerts. Mr. Partha Barua, lead singer of the popular Bangladeshi band “SOULS”, commenced his musical career in 1989 with the release of his first album with the band in the same year. Under his stewardship, “SOULS”, with a focus on contemporary Bangla music combined with Western music, has become one of the best rock bands in Bangladesh. The band which has released immensely popular albums such as “Ay Amon Porichoy” and “Aj din Katuk Ganey” won the Best Band award by “Meril Prothom Alo” Star Awards in 2006. “SOULS” also participated in the prestigious 6th South Asian Band Festival in Delhi and Jaipur in December 2012 under ICCR sponsorship and was deeply appreciated. Mr. Partha Barua is also a noted music composer and has composed many albums, background music for TV productions and commercials. His most popular songs include Ay Amon Porichoy, Nishshanggota, Chayer Cope, Dekha Hobe Bondhu, etc. Born in Dinajpur to late Mahmud-un-Nabi, the legendary modern song exponent of Bangladesh, Ms. Samina Chowdhury started her professional musical career in 1981. Over the years, Ms. Chowdhury has achieved tremendous popularity through her renditions of modern songs both in Bangladesh and several countries abroad such as India, UK, USA, Canada, Australia, Germany, UAE, Qatar, etc. She has released 12 musical albums till date. Her biggest hits include Kobita porar prohor, Amar buker moddhe khane, Tumi ele paye paye, etc. Ms Chowdhury is the proud recipient of the National Film Award for the best female singer in 2006, best female singer award from the “Bachosas” journalists Association in 1981 and the first prize for patriotic songs in the reality show “Notun Kuri” in 1977. She is the brand ambassador for Save the Children Bangladesh. Ms Fahmida Nabi, elder sister of Ms. Shamina Chowdhury, commenced her musical career in 1979 and has been a very popular singer, songwriter and music composer ever since. She primarily sings classical and modern Bengali songs, besides Rabindra Sangeet and Nazrul Sangeet. Ms Nabi is a recipient of National Film Award 2007 for best female playback singer. She has also won the Bangladesh Journalists’ Association Award 2006, Meril Prothom Alo Award 2007, Lux Channel I Performance Award 2008 and Dhallywood Award 2009 for best female singer. She won the BBC popular singer award in 2005. Her bestselling albums include Ek Mutho Gaan 1&2, Mone Ki Porena, Amar Bela Je Jay, etc. Shubhashish Mazumdar Bappa, better known as Bappa Mazumdar, is an eminent singer, lyricist and music composer of Bangladesh. He is the son of music couple Ustad Brin Mazumdar and Ila Mazumdar. Mr Mazumdar, who is famous for his Bengali romantic compositions, is the lead singer of the popular Bangladesh rock band “Dal Chhut” which he founded in November 1996. Besides releasing five music albums – Ahh!!! (1997), Hridoypur (2000), Akashchoori (2002), Jochhnabihar (2007) and Aay Amontron (2010), Dalchhut is also popular for its life performances on stage and television. Mr Bappa Mazumdar has released several hit solo albums such as Din Bari Jaay (2005), Surjo Snane Chol (2008) and Ek Mutho Gan 2 (2010). He works with a number of contemporary artists and has also composed music for several songs for other musicians. The above Bangladeshi cultural delegation led by Mr. Partha Barua will perform in musical concerts at Bhubaneshwar on 27 September, at Patna on 30 September, and at Varanasi on 3 October, 2013 before returning back to Dhaka on 5 October, 2013. *****
