Individually we can all gather tree seeds where they will not survive and plant on somewhere, rescue seedlings from roadsides where they would be mown down by council workers or gather them from gardens where they may not be wanted. Without awareness weve be cutting down trees since the stone age, meditating on this fact should give rise to an understanding of areas to plant. In Wales a knowledge of Welsh tells us plainly where trees used to grow on mass e.g Bryn Bedw (Hill of the Birch). We can also plant fruit trees so others can benefit, just see that they can grow safely and you place them in the right environment, a glance at a Ordinance Survey Pathfinder may give ideas.
