Indonesia Corruption Watch (ICW) says that most of the 756 people convicted on graft charges in the last three years received lenient punishment, ranging from 18-month to two-year prison terms. “It is unfair considering that the state lost around Rp 6.4 trillion (US$620.8 million),” ICW researcher Tama Satya Langkun said in Jakarta on Sunday as quoted by tempo.co. He said that such punishment was not a deterrent to graft. Moreover, he added, graft convicts had the possibility of receiving remissions. For example, he went on, bribery convicts Angelina Sondakh and Hartati Murdaya were sentenced to only four years and six months and two years and eight months in prison, respectively, in their high-profile graft cases. Tama said that only five of the 756 graft convicts were sentenced to more than five years. One of the five is Zulkarnaen Djabar, who was sentenced to 15 years in prison for his role in the Koran procurement graft case.
