Indonesia clearly falls among the countries where women’s health is in dire need of improvement and where universal health care (UHC) could make a difference if properly designed and implemented. While the use of midwives’ services has increased in recent years, for many Indonesian women, quality maternal health services are not available, if not at significant financial cost. Irrespective of the recent controversy on whether maternal mortality has increased or stagnated, Indonesia’s mortality rate of 359 deaths per 100,000 live births, is high by all standards.
