Indonesian television’s RCTI, interviewing Dr Peter Thorley, the National Museum’s acting head of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Program, at the Old Masters: Australia’s Great Bark Artists exhibition. The interview explored the historic relationship between Indigenous Australians and Indonesian fishermen from Makassar in Sulawesi, who visited Arnhem Land every wet season for more than 200 years to collect trepang (sea cucumbers) which are a delicacy in South East Asia. The Government stopped the practice in 1907. The relationship is illustrated in, MATHAMAN MARIKA’s, Makasar Boiling Down Trepang, (pictured below) which features in Old Masters. bit.ly/R5HZQx
