Industrial Council is accepting applications for its 2014 Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) class. An EMT is an Emergency Medical Technician. These are the first responders whose duty it is to assess, stabilize and transport patients in a medical emergency. To qualify you must: (1) be a woman head of household (2) be earning between $10,000-$40,000 per year(recently laid off-applicants will also be considered) (3) possess a valid state issued driver’s license (4) have a clean criminal background and driving record (5) be fluent in English (6) possess good basic math and reading skills (7) be able to work legally in the US. There is no cost for the training as the tuition is paid for by a grant from the Chicago Foundation for Women. There is however, a $180 fee for materials and a substantial commitment of time and energy required to successfully complete the course. We have a limited number of spaces available and are looking for those women who are most likely to successfully complete the program and take full advantage of this training and career opportunity. Classes are at ICNC, 320 N. Damen Ave., every Saturday from 9 am until 4 pm. Pre-classes begin in March and continue through mid-November. Earnings will vary depending on what type of position you accept. An estimate from a large ambulance company hiring EMTs, is $30,000 for the first year for a 45 hour work week. We encourage our EMT graduates to continue their education in the health care field. For example, EMT experience is required to become a Paramedic, who after a year of training, can earn a substantially higher income. ICNC has a successful placement program and will assist in finding you placement after you pass the state exam. While we do not guarantee every graduate a job, there is a demand for EMT’s at the present time. We currently partner with Superior Ambulance, St. Anthonys Hospital and 1st Response, who have hired students from our class.
