Industry responsible for the destruction of several segments of the lake rewarded with millions of dollars from their political friends: Farmers should not fear enforcement. The rest of us, on the other hand, are left to fend for ourselves as we struggle with declining property values, public health threats, and lost business. Ronald Reagans voluntary compliance strategy has no place in Vermont when it comes to safeguarding public water supplies, and we certainly should not be relying on the counsel of a man whose policies have helped create public health emergencies of epic proportions from one end of the country to the other. Very disappointing day for anyone who cares about fairness and equity in public policy. Brilliant day, indeed, for the political elites engineering for their friends the enshrinement of a protected class of industry to the detriment of the rest of us Vermonters. Look for more bacterial outbreaks and the continued decline of downstream communities as a result of this extension of the status quo. It truly pays to be upstream.
