Inevitably, I have been asked the question: What if anything will I miss about Denmark? As irritating as I found the place, it is not without its merits. Here are a few: Good health care. Decent public transport. Hugos in Koge. The Helsingor Helsingborg ferry. Shir Hatzafon synagogue. Brondby. The Danish national handball teams. Decent running sushi. TIVOLI. Torvehallen. Sosterne Grene. Ismageriet. The gang at Tycho Brahes Alle. Liberal Alliance (though I cherish my Social Demokraterne friends). The hotel in Gilleleje that charged $20 for bathrobe rental. Fiskefrikadeller (with US cocktail sauce). MASH. The Maersk Oil Comms Team. Danes who marched in yarmulkes in a stand against blind hatred and displaced aggression. To be sure, 55% income tax and 25% VAT is a steep price for such kindnesses. And I deeply look forward to being in a place where people can pronounce consonants. But while Denmark can be profoundly irritating, it is by no means shitty.
