Infected Nurse Cleared; While (New) New York Case Emerges, Prompting Greater Public Concern Over Isolation/Quarantine Protocols... Great news today, that Texas nurse, Nina Pham, was declared free of the Ebola Virus contracted while among the staff in Dallas - tending Thomas Eric Duncan, the first person diagnosed in America (after arriving from West Africa), who died of the disease - in hospital there - on October 8th,..thus far, the only fatality from the virus reported here in America. Unfortunately NEW FEARS have emerged - almost simultaneously with her recovery; as a doctor, Craig Spencer, was admitted to Bellevue Hospital in New York City, after notifying health authorities of his illness and isolating himself in his apartment in Manhattan... Dr. Spencer had been working with Doctors Without Borders in Guinea treating Ebola patients, and completed his work on Oct. 12, Dr. Bassett said. He flew out of the country on Oct. 14, traveling via Europe, and arrived in New York on Oct. 17. (From: New York Times) Amid the news coverage and a high-powered press conference, which included New York Governor, Andrew Cuomo, and NYC Mayor, Bill de Blasio - there began widespread medical (and media :P ) speculation - that perhaps both a mandated period of isolation be required for ALL PERSONS arriving in America - from the affected Western African region, AND longer periods of quarantine be imposed, relative to those exhibiting any of the symptoms of the disease. IMHO - without all the attendant hysteria and hype - perhaps such steps ARE warranted under the circumstances,...if only to instill greater public confidence and tamp down fears - while medical authorities grapple with containing and controlling the virus.
