Inflatable arm will soften up anti-bomb robot It looks like a cross between a miniature tank and a toy elephant – but it could be the future of military robotics. Last week iRobot, based in Bedford, Massachusetts, applied for a US patent for an inflatable arm that could make military robots lighter, cheaper, more agile and safer. In addition to making the robot vacuum cleaner, Roomba, iRobot is maker of PackBot, a tracked robot that that features an articulated arm designed for defusing improvised explosive devices and for demining. Two of the machines played a role in the aftermath of the disaster at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant in Japan in 2011, helping to clear debris and aiding imaging of shattered reactor buildings. The new device is a riff on the PackBot, but with its metal arm replaced by a lightweight rubbery arm that can be pumped up to the stiffness required. Pairs of artificial muscles manipulate the arm and its grippers. #juanid
