Inflexible Opinions Can Drive People Away Other people have as much right to their opinions as we have to our own. The place of dogma in religion is arguable, but justifiable. To someone who believes in God, He is omniscient and perfect, hence cannot make mistakes nor change His mind as a result of newly acquired information. Since humans are neither omniscient nor perfect, we should be amenable to modifying the way we think. Since we are not always right, others may be right. Henry Ford is alleged to have said, People can have any color car they want as long as it is black. Of course, as long as he was the sole manufacturer of the car, he could control what everyone got, even if he could not control what they want. In absence of such exclusiveness, obstinate insistence on getting our own way will simply drive customers to competitors, much to our detriment. This is as true in human relationships as it is in industry. Insistence on our own opinion will drive people toward others who are more accommodating, and the resulting isolation and loneliness will be far more costly that the loss of customers. We need not change colors like a chameleon, but neither should we be rigid and inflexible in our opinions.
