Information Received from City Councilor Chuck Wilkins regarding the upcoming Vote on Gross receipt tax in Sandoval County that all voters should know or at read read: "Mike. The money can only be used by 4 year public colleges and it can only be used for bricks and mortar (buildings and infrastructure). It can NOT be used for instructors, books, computer, and like. At the current time no 4 year college has indicated any intentions of constructing a building in the next 5 years, so the money (currently over $3.6 million) is building at a rate of over $2 million a year. So we are requesting the voters consider reducing it to $1 million a year so we can move a million to public safety. The money just continues to sit there until a 4 year college decides to construct another building, once a college decides to build they would request support from the city. The Governing Body would decide the terms. An example is the current UNM West building. The building cost $13.2 million and the city paid 63% of the cost. We have a few colleges in town: UNM West and Highland to name a couple. CNM is funded through a mill levy on our property tax and does not qualify for the Sales Tax."
